Desensitization: Helping Fearful Dogs Feel Safe

Desensitization can take days, weeks, or even months. Go slowly enough that your dog never becomes fearful along the way. Rushing the process will only make it fail.

Putting the Technique Into Practice

  • Start by exposing your dog to a very small amount or low level of whatever triggers his fear. For instance, if bicycles scare him, begin with a bike placed 100 feet away from your dog.
  • Reward him whenever he stays calm and unafraid around the bicycle.
  • Slowly bring the bicycle nearer. As long as your dog stays relaxed, reward him with treats and praise.
  • If he ever becomes anxious, move the bicycle farther away and continue at a slower pace.
  • Once your dog stays relaxed around a stationary bicycle, move the bike 100 feet away again and have someone ride it slowly past him.
  • Again, gradually bring the slowly moving bicycle closer, rewarding your dog for staying calm and relaxed.
  • Repeat this process as often as needed, gradually increasing the speed of the moving bicycle.

Pairing this technique with Counter Conditioning will help your dog overcome his fears.
