The Bulldog

Affectionate, loyal and famously stubborn, the Bulldog is a truly devoted and easygoing companion. These dogs like to trail their owner or family from room to room and generally get along well with children and other household pets. Keep in mind that they crave attention, and their happiness depends on receiving it.

Grooming

The coat needs very little upkeep, but the facial wrinkles should be kept dry and healthy.

Physical Characteristics

General Appearance: Sturdy, heavy and fairly low to the ground, compact, with a bold, massive head that is broad in proportion to the dog's size.

Color: Brindle, red, fawn with or without black masks and/or white patches. Also solid white and pied.

Coat: Short, smooth, close and fine in texture.

Tail: Straight or screw-shape, short, set low and carried downwards.

Ears: Far apart, set high, small, thin and rose shaped.

Body: Low, pear-shaped, short and strong back, broad shoulders and narrow towards the loin. The belly is tucked up, with a broad chest and widely set forelegs

Exercise

Steady, moderate exercise keeps them healthy. Because of the shape of their head and breathing passages, they can easily become short of breath, so walks should not be done at a fast pace, especially in hot weather.

Additional Comment

Because of the way the dog's nose and throat are built, airflow tends to be restricted. This makes them breathe noisily and causes trouble breathing in hot weather. With their broad heads and narrow pelvis, puppies are commonly delivered by caesarean section.
