Best Dog Food

Dog Cartoon

The best dog food is one that supplies your dog with all the nutrients needed to produce an energetic healthy dog.

Eating a well-balanced meal will ensure you of a good healthy dog; promote a long and happy life, a beautiful coat, and a lot of energy.

Make sure your dog is getting the right balance of foods each day. The different considerations are protein, carbohydrates and good fats.

Essential diet guidelines

Many people are unsure of the proper balance for their dog’s diet and health needs. The general rule includes the following:

  • 2-25% protein
  • 20-35% fat
  • 40-60% carbohydrates

Dogs also need vitamins and minerals. One of the most important needs is vitamin B1. Dogs do not store vitamin B1 well in their bodies; it’s often not found in dog food, check the label on commercial dog food for this essential vitamin.

Feeding your dog a diet of lean meat alone will not meet their dietary requirements. Dogs in nature eat their prey whole, which contains everything they need. Coming as close to nature as possible is your job as a dog owner.

Studies have been done about the habits of dogs, what they eat and dog health. These studies revealed dogs prefer to have their food cooked and mushy rather than raw and meaty.

My Chihuahua tend to be rather picky eaters, although they are healthy dogs, more than likely much of this was due to my concern over them not eating enough, so I catered to them. I have heard the same from many toy or small dog owners.

Even so, dogs will likely eat most things put in front of them so you must do the job of differentiating for them.

Commercial Dog Foods

Most people tend to feed their dogs commercially available food. These are often fortified with the necessary vitamins and mineral, read the label carefully.

Manufacturers know these foods need to be easy for buyers to store. That is why they come in simple cans or bags and are a favorite of dog owners. The downside here is the expense. The cheaper food may result in higher vet bills.

Homemade Dog Foods

Many more people are starting to make their own dog food. It can be hard to balance the food just right. You need to carefully and thoroughly study the subject in order to make sure you’re giving the best possible diet for a good healthy dog.

There are some health issues which might pop up if pet owners are not careful. An example; putting too much milk powder in the food can cause scouring. Even a healthy dog has a hard time digesting lactose.

Don’t just create your own recipes, it’s important to find ones time tested.

Be Careful Of Bones

Another thing to consider is while dogs enjoy chewing on bones it may not be the best dog food. It is important to avoid many of them. The biggest culprits are
  • cooked chicken
  • lamb chop
  • fish bones

Avoid these especially if bones have been cooked or are small; it’s a lot more likely they will splinter which may cause problems. Be extra careful if you feed your dog from the table.

Pay Attention To Your Dog

Learn from your dog. If he’s had a bad experience with a certain meal, you will probably notice he avoids it in the future. This is a natural instinct of survival you should pay attention.

Following the unique diet requirements and looking for the best dog food for dog health will ensure you have a healthy dog and a happy one for a long time to come.
